Summer Learning Journey - In The Beginning

I am doing the Summer Learning Journey, this is activity one. If you would like to take part in this here is the Link, and here is the website I got the information from.

Activity 1. The First Settlers.

Maui & The Giant Fish

 Fact 1.
From reading this short story I have learnt that Maui will do almost anything to get what he wants and in very interesting ways,  when his brothers wouldn't let him get any bait  he made his own bait out of his own blood.

Fact 2.
Maui was a great fisherman and his ancestor Murirangawhenua had given him a jaw bone that he used as a hook. And Maui was determined to prove to his brothers that he could fish and he honestly knew deep down inside that he needed to accomplish this and prove his brothers utterly wrong. When he did it he didn't get greedy he went and got the village and tell them there was fresh food (unlike his greedy brothers).

Fact 3.
Maui had built anger over the years from his brothers. being mean, laughing at him & in some way Maui got his revenge.

Overall I think that Maui is a very strong personality. In fact I already knew this story so it shows how popular the Maui Myths & Legends stories are.

I hope you enjoyed reading this because I know that I enjoyed doing it

Aboriginal Art story

The Vigorous Spell

Once upon a time in the deep blue ocean, a turtle was ready to lay her eggs. Away she swam from her home, to lay upon a sandy beach. She quickly scrabbled up the sand and laid her soon to be children. She cast a spell so strong and vigorous so that her eggs could grow and hatch safely. Weeks went by until the most beautiful sunrise arose and her turtles hatched. Away they swam, into the wonderful deep, blue ocean, floating away, full of life.

The most magical poem

Hi, this is just a poem that I wrote. I would like some feedback, so please comment and I hope you enjoy reading my poem.

I will put in the Box
A powerful source of a simmering summer haze
A strong, wealthy, loving dog.
The flutter of a butterfly that is like a square jumping out of paper
I will put in the Box
The clouds that were playing.
An elephant too small to see, full of rage.
A net that is bouncy as can be also called a trampoline
I put into the Box
My grandads Army uniform,
An inch of light,

And a lightning strike.
Image result for Lightning strike

I put into the Box
The wonderous mind of moonlight.
The whistling of wind
The overgrown grass that lives on the ground

My box is fashioned from dark grey wood & glass.
The top is a tinted grey blue glass with grey wood on the rims.
The hinges on the box are made out of old and rusted steel.

The bottom of the box is a dark grey wood

I Biked into the box
Through the woods, the bike wheeles hitting the ground,
The rough grounds rubbing against my tyres,
I see my dog zoom past, enjoying his time.

please comment if there is anything I could have done that might have made it easier for you to learn how to do this.

Thankyou for watching.

Spring Poem

Today I decided to write a Poem
Here It is:

Spring is here
Spring is bright

Spring is here like candle light

Spring is warm
Spring is Warm

Windy air (not too windy)
But not too cool

Leaves are here
Leaves are bright

Goodbye snow
Hello Flowers

Ice creams are good
but Cool drinks best

This Is why I like Spring
Spring Is good But Summer is best

Goodbye clouds
Hello sun

Jerseys Off
T - Shirts on

Pool time is almost here
Don't get too excited

Spring is here
You know it's here

Leaves are pretty & so are flowers

The air is nice and warm.

Sunshine is coming,
prepare for the best.

Winter is gone,
Say hello to Spring

- Julia

I hope you liked it. I'm sorry if I have made any mistakes please tell me if I have.

William Pike

Yesterday william pike came into Rimu. He talked about what happened and how he lost his leg. Last year he spoke alot more to the yr 6,7,8s. He has actually made a book called ‘ everyday’s a good dayAug 10, 2017 2:11:47 PM.jpg

Here is the blurb to the book
On the evening on 25 September2007, two young climbers were caught in laharon the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, after a volcanic explosion.

Now that is only some of the blurb. So what William said is that the mountain exploded with gas. mud and dust went everywhere, he said that it was 600 times of the olympic pools. That’s alot of rock and mud. He was in this hut sort of thing. So his legs got stuck and he was cold. His friend james went and got help. He said if I didn’t die of my injuries he would die if hypothermia. This is also on the back of his book

James uneasily walked through the rubble(mud and rock)to the main door. He turned around and looked at me.

My last words to James were,
‘Tell my mum and dad I love them’.

‘Nah mate, you can tell them that yourself.’he replied

And then James was gone.
I was left sitting in the Dome Shelter,
Seriously cold, crushed and seriously injured,
And now all alone.

I do not want to show the photo of his leg wripped open because it is graphic
But he came to speak to the yr ⅞ for the william pike challenge award.

My book

          The Maze Runner:

Blurb: When the lift cranks open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone - an army of boys welcomes him to the GLADE, an encampment at the centre of a terrible maze. The GLADERS have no idea why they're there, or what's happened to the world outside. All hey know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything to find out/

So far I am 1/4 of the way threw and I have just fell in love with it.
I would rate the book so far a 4/5 just because i haven't read the ending yet. *note* I am not an expert at rating books but I think this would be for people age 10 and up.

My Narrative

In class we have been working on writing narratives so here is my narrative. I have had fun and worked hard on it.

                  The Movie

Tearing open the Theatre door wondering what the movie was going to be.
Rushing through my head thoughts were just like fish swimming in a tank, except for the fact they were thinking 4-D or 3-D I decided on 4-D.
Wripping the ticket out of His hand, striding with pride into the Movie theatre. To stop to an unpleasent surprise, front Row is the worst and I’m in it. Ads, Ads and even more Ads kept playing.

Buckets, within them held 3-D glasses came and went. Momentarily I realised the seats were different then I remembered this was 4-D.
Action packed is what it was, Suddenly it was like I was on a rollercoaster infact I’m pretty Sure it was a rollercoaster. Bang!! Bang!!! BANG!!!!!
I was sent flying through the air I was a Human Cannon ball, Other dimensions were rushing past me like a whirpool. Eventually I stopped with an unnexpected, soft as a feather landing. Bounding up, checking out her surroundings.Lollies from top to bottom, it looked like nature in candy land. Heaven she thought well not for me. She touched rasberry licorice and It was at this moment She realised THIS WAS NOT A DREAM!!!!

Pounding 1 million times a second her heart was clearly racing. Sharks were chomping in her brain, sweaty hands, Anxious thoughts were wandering into there own unwelcome spaces. Dimensions are crazy, How will I get out. Caustiosness had become who she was tiny steps at a time. Peering everywhere she Eyes out a computer with a chair infront and a bag of delicious looking pocorn. Intreaged she shuffles closer…

Eventually she reaches the Magnificent chair and plays the movie, It was the movie she was just watching. 4-D, Earlier the movie was 4-D so the movie playing must 4-D right. Plonked on the seat watching the movie she

heard the three bangs she heard earlier. Suddenly she went flying, Watching dimensions zooming past her with a sudden drop everyone was staring at her in the theatre In the front row.

Tears coming down her cheeks running through the hallway. Realising that this was not a dream and she had to contact a scientist, Made a decision in her mind she wasn’t going to come near this theatre ever again, And with that she shredded open and closed the doors. She was never seen at this Movie theatre again.

Showing how to use screencastify

Today we were learning how to use Screencastify.
I already knew how to use it but I didn't know you could draw on it.
It was pretty hard to film because there were lots of people doing it.
It was still as fun as going on a rollercoaster.

Superhero steps to success

This term yr 5/6 are doing a topic of super heroes.
We had to create our own super hero draw it, Make a logo, make a biography about him/her and then name it. I designed my own and added features it took me two sessions and I also had to make a sculpture out of tin foil of my super hero which I haven't quite finished.

Stretcho Retro

 Bio:

Starting off in Gymnastics then trampolining, Julia Manton has all her life been flexible. The job of being the town saver for crimes that involve flexibility, strength and Mindset she is always on the run. This is her first time being called for an out of town job, I wonder what will happen…File_001.jpeg

                    File_000.jpeg
With our tin foil sculpture it was inspired by Alberto Giacometti. Here is a photo of what we were inspired by.

NZ artists

Over the past few weeks I have been working on NZ Artists which is part of our time table in Class. We had to pick 3 NZ artists and write A bio about them and have to make a digital replica of our favourite Painting/sculpture/Photo and that is really hard and I haven't finished my digital replica yet but part of that is because it takes a long time. My Camp

Amazing! Wow!
Last week yr 4,5,6 had a camp at Living Springs in Governors bay, Port hills.
We all had to walk 2and a half hours and it was so tiring  but the bus drove us to governors bay and someone called Cindy from living springs was our helper for the next 2 days.
Learning new things along the way we had to walk up a super steep hill and it was really tricky and I was over the top when we got to camp. Then we put tents up and got settled in the we did something called REC, it's where there are lot's of activities you can choose from these were the activities...
Monorail(mini rollercoaster), Mini golf, Trampolines, soccer, and then after wards we all went swimming looking forwards to the waterslide afterwards( I got really muddy) and that was AWESOME!!!
Then dinner and dessert Then The coolest game ever. THE COLOUR GAME. Then bed.

The next day we went to Archery and Air rifle, and also played a game called animal survival. I was really good at air rifle, but not as good at Archery.
Then I did bouldering and it was really fun. bouldering is indoor rock climbing and you don't wear a harness
but it was really fun because we played a game called shark attack there are two sharks and people running around cones and when the instructor says shark attack 1234 then we have to go to the wall and be on the wall and on 4 the sharks touch anybody who is not on the wall. afterwards was yummy lunch which was Nachos mmm delicious. then we went back to camp and had dinner dessert then at 7 we all went to the pool and that was fun. Then people with hair longer than their ears had to get their hair dried and then we went to bed.

Wake up time. In the morning we had to pack and then have breakfast and unpack our tents and have Max a living springs person that talk to us about his country and then we went to the the farm where we got to feed animals, See a cow be hand milked and see how the machine works, eat delicious lunch and ice cream, then we got to see baaabara the sheep be shawn and their fluff is so soft.
We also got to meet king the dog and ride Horses. Then we said our goodbyes and left on the bus home!!

Jamie Duff

Surprise, surprise! Today we had a surprise by Jamie Duff and got to see his race car. The race cars they use are made out of the lightest metals and the strongest metals e.g. titanium, aluminium. we got to feel the bolts that would go into the car, they felt as if they were plastic. different parts of the race car felt different, for instance some bit of the car felt really slimy. I was excited about this 'MYSTERY PERSON' because I didn't really know who he was but I had heard of him before. I found out that Jamie had grown up around race cars and his dad inspired him and as he grew older at around 16 he was tiny but he as just tall enough to reach the pedals and at his first race people were like ' who is that driving '  and ' no way he's driving that '.I have enjoyed this experience that I had today and it was amazing that people from our school organised this. Here are some photos from Rimu meeting Jamie Duff and his dad!!
We also made it into the newspaper YAHOOO!

P.A.L.

This week I did P.A.L. ( Physical Activity Leaders) training at Lincoln Community Centre. Eight people from my school came. We were taught that if the sun is facing towards the pupils then you have to turn them so you are facing the sun. It was all really learning how to adapt games and things like that. we had to think about the vision we wanted for our own P.A.L. leaders at our school. we got frozen treats on the way back to school which was nice of our principal. there were rotations and group names that have several schools in them. our group was called Mccallum.
here are some photos!!

I am very excited about it. we are sleeping in TENTS!!!and not cabins :( oh well it will be just as fun as last years camp. We will be bouldering and doing Archery and a couple other things. We will all get to go swimming in a HEATED pool WOW!!
We are there for 3 days wed- fri. we will get photos you will be able to see n next week's blog.

Self Portrait Art

Last week and some of this week Rimu have been working on self portraits but they are not usual self portraits. we had a photo of us and a draw version we cut them both up into strips and numbered them. And from the right to left on a sheet of paper glued them down then we folded them on the edges of the pieces. When you look one way you see the drawing and the other side you see the photo. It was trickier than I had expected, the drawing and finding the right pieces to glue down was really tricky. The easiest thing I would say was folding the piece of paper. Here is what mine turned out like.

2nd week of school

Hi, this is my second half week in my new class RIMU!! so far it has been going really well and I am really enjoying myself. My teachers are Mrs Spragg and Mrs Taylor. All of this short yet very long week, so far we have had to do swimming lessons as a class.
Rimu is a 46 student classroom so eight went to swim with Te Mahure ( the class bellow us in year groups).  The water in the pool at our School was like you were stepping into a big huge pool of  ice, the dreaded water made you shiver and it was a relief when you were back in warmer clothes.  In the swimming lessons I was in the top group with some other people , we did Breaststroke, Freestyle  and backstroke.
As a class we have been doing activities such as learning new games and Tic Tac Toe work. Now onto the Tic Tac Toe, it is where on a google spreadsheet and there are a range of activities that we can do. For example you can decide to do, Reading, Writing and Maths and this is a Self Managing activity. I did ' who murdered billy gobler' and you had to use a calculator and you had to learn tactics and it was really tricky.
Last week Mrs Taylor taught our class called Indian Tag. It is not do do anything to do with indian culture or people.
