Sailing 2018

This fine, sunny, Friday was full of a lot of nerves and excitement, it was almost like I was ready to fail.
Dashing into school with a smile on my face. I opened the classroom door ready to go to Lake Rua
where we would be sailing. But first I have to give my old shoes to a friend because they didn't have
any shoes they could sail in. We all had to get together on the mat to go over things but I couldn’t keep
my excitedness inside; it was almost like an explosion of fireworks were trying to boom out of my body.
Soon we headed for the bus.

As soon as we had left we arrived somewhere new. Peering out of the glass window, I spied the lake.
Suddenly I felt a bump; that was because we went up a mound of dirt. The whole class ran out of the
bus like a stampede of elephants kicking up dust. We got our bags in a place on top of tarpaulins.
Almost immediately, the instructors shuffled towards our group. Usually all of your instructors are
nice but no. Although we had multiple instructors one of them, condemned my group.
All of the instructors talked u through that day quite gleefully. It was sort of cold so is started getting
a bit cold as the wind caught my shoulders like an icicle forming against me. As Well as learning how
to do things around here we learned the type of yachts we were using were called - The Optimus -

In the beginning we learned how to set up our boat, I thought it it was quite easy; but it seems that
some groups unfortunately didn't find it easy and the boats were treating the children like victims
whilst the boat was the bully. I think that our group did it amazingly.
Eventually we got to go out onto the grimy sparkling lake.

It was a race - Get your life Jackets and sprint to the water. This year there was an unspoken race.
This happens when everybody just runs; and this is exactly what happened. At this point in time is was
extremely nervous. In my group of three I wanted to go first and then I went second which is was
jumping up and down because I was being a demented looney person because I had a terror
that was so great it leapt out of me like a hungry lion; I wasn’t exactly scared but I wasn’t exactly
not scared. I was more nervous and more often than not that is the way it is.

As soon as Gracie got out of the water I was like electricity; slithering everywhere in a crackle.
I hopped into the boast and I was on my way (my very hard way). Lots of things went wrong.
  1. I forgot that when you are steering with the rudder (The steerer) when you tilt it one way
  2. it tilts the other way
  3. I went too far out
  4. I needed help from an instructor.

I understand that this isn't nearly too bad but I didn’t enjoy it. Closely following this we all went and
had lunch, and went back straight into sailing.  It was compulsory to go a second round and so I
did but this time it was even worse. My boat almost tipped.

That was the end for me!!!!.

Someone in my class got stuck under and boat and when the instructor came along with their fancy
motor boat the motor cut his ankle. He went home after that. I think that everybody felt bad for him.
My friend Bree went on the water and got stuck once in trees and was also stuck in the middle of
Lake Rua. I felt bad for Bree and apparently Bree was screaming for help. She had a panic attack
as well which isn't the greatest,  but she cheered up after a while.

Shortly after this we all carried on for a bit longer and I got changed and hung around the dry area.
A little bit later everyone got back and we packed up and went back to school. Here are some photos:

The boy Underwater

Since the start of the term our class has been reading 'Boy Underwater' by 'Adam Baron.

We have not finished the book but it is going great so far. Here is the BLURB!:

Cymbeline Igloo (yes, really)
Has NEVER been swimming.

Not ever. Not once.

But how hard can it be? He's Googled front crawl and
He's found his dad's old pair of trunks. He's totally ready.

What he's not ready for is the accident at the pool -
or how it leads his mum to a sudden breakdown.

Now, with the help of his friends old and new.
Cymbeline must solve the mystery of why
his mum never took him near water -
and it would turn his whole life upside down...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would rate this book so far an 8.5/10 because It is really cool with lots of detail as well.
Here is the book rating: 4.6/5

The age rating for this book is: 10 +

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today is sad for a few of us in class because our student teacher (Miss. Anderson):
& Mrs. Stratton:
Are leaving because
1) Mrs. Spragg is back so we don't need Mrs. Stratton and Miss. Anderson's learning time here is over.

I hope you enjoyed the blog!

Athletics Day Recount!

Kia Ora. This week's blog is a recount about Athletics day at my school. In class, we have been focusing on the writing genre 'Recount' so far. I have been learning about how to add detail into recounts to make them exciting as well as making sure that even though I use descriptive language my recount does not become a narrative in structure.  I found learning how to do that difficult because I have always written recounts without description and that is what the teacher's would like us to improve. I think that I have improved on my description in each paragraph. I hope you enjoy!

~ Beginning of Term 4 - Novel Study - Anne Frank ~

This week, I started reading a different book to which I wouldn't normally. This book is one I had never heard of before, but enjoy it to pieces! It is called "The Diary of A Young Girl" | Author - 'Anne Frank'.
This is just a bit more info about it. *Our Teachers chose this book for my whole group*

| This story is a real image of being trapped in your own country, the author was a real girl and the diary was just a snippet of what her life was like to outsiders - if you read this take great care|

| * age recommendation  - 11+ * |

My Term 2 Reflection!

Below is my Reflection for Term 2 that our teachers made us do:

This Term has been an okay term. I have enjoyed all of the reading activities especially about the POSTED. I have been improving on things I think like Reading and Maths but I don’t know about Writing and that has been good. I have collected 100 hero cards and I am proud of every week always getting my Reward time. The groups I have been in are good and I have been enjoying what we have been doing which is good. I am also Proud of trying my hardest.

I think that I have shown my HERO qualities when I have been doing things as a house leader and helping tidy up the Library and making sure that (mainly) little kids don’t get too lonely. I don’t know if things haven’t gone well for me.

I will say that some things in maths and poems in writing have been little bit difficult but that’s good that it’s challenging. Maths has challenged me a little bit but just in the geometry things we have been doing, trying to figure out the radius or diameter of something. It’s a bit confusing because I didn’t understand that. BEDMAS was challenging the first question I did with it but from then on it was so easy. Trying to keep up with the posted questions hasn’t been too difficult but getting the right answer and making sure it is correct can be hard with some questions that aren’t straight to the point. I think that next term my focus will be different.

I won’t be trying to focus on different activities. It will be to make sure that when I’m confused I ask more questions because at the moment I feel like when I ask the teacher about something that I am confused about, I feel like I become an annoyance to them and so sometimes this term I have just kept to myself trying to figure it out. So next term my focus will be: Asking more questions.

Reading!

For the past few weeks in Reading I have been learning about Tsunamis and doing activities to show I understand what Tsunamis are. Did you know that when a Tsunami is about to happen a natural warning is that the water will go into sea and will be like a vacuum and the water goes foamy, from then on you have around 3 - 5 minutes to get to a higher or safer place.

I hope you learned something new. Please comment if you learned anything.

Maths!

The past two weeks in my maths group we have been learning some Measurement/Geometry.
Say if we were doing Some Reflection, Rotation or Translation. say if I showed you this:
and I asked you if it was Rotation, Reflection or Translation. It would be reflection because when something reflects it is show you the image that same way but it is like it has been split down the middle to have two things in opposite directions mirroring each other. Translations is turning something to the opposite direction to what it was in first. If sit was facing right it would be facing left. Rotation is when something gets turned Clockwise or anti - clockwise.

Thank you for reading my Maths blog post and I hope you learned something.

Finished Newspaper Reports!

over the past two weeks in Rimu we have been learning about and creating Reports, specificaly Newspaper Reports. The way we learnt to Write Reports was by writing in third person about an event that has already happened and not including any 'I' or 'Me'. Here is my finished product of the Newspaper Reports.

I hope you liked this post. Please comment if you learnt anything.

Poetry Anthology

Over the past term, in Rimu we have been doing different activities everyday. One of those activities is Poetry Anthology. every week we had to do different types of poems and to a high standard. These are all the types we had to do and I will teach you how to write one of them.
Haiku - you write this by in the first line having 5 syllables second 7 syllables and third 5 syllables again. And now for the rest of the poems we created - Acrostic, Cinquain, Shape/Concrete and Alliteration. I hope you enjoy my Poems

Newspaper Reports!

Over the last two weeks in class, we have been learning how to write Newspaper Reports. We started off by learning how to understand what goes into a Newspaper Report and we looked at two different reports and we identified which one was better with a checklist. We did different activities to learn more about Newspapers and then eventually we got to write one. I wrote mine about Little Red Riding Hood, but not like the fairytale. I would really like to get some feedback on the piece of writing I have written below and if it looks like a newspaper and how I could improve the newspaper:

Just so you know, they don't line up because they are 3 different screenshots.
Again I would like some feedback on the writing that I have done and if it looks like a newspaper and how I could improve the newspaper. Here is the link to the website.

The Pop Art Movement

This week while the year 5/6's have been on camp we have had Mrs Stratton in as our teacher. She had assigned to us to do pop art work around Roy Lichtenstein. We had to find out about his art work, what styles he used and how he used onomatopoeia words. I learnt that Roy Lichtenstein's artwork was at first thought to be sort of bad  but that overtime people learnt to love it. We had to look at some of his artwork and figure out different things. here is a piece of his artwork - Image result for roy lichtenstein 'Girl Drowning' and here is my artwork -
I hope you enjoyed this blog post.

Rimu Class - Hooked on Books!

This weeks in Yalhurst we have been having a Hooked on Books Week. We had this so that we could expand our reading genres and different authors and the books we read get us hooked but we don't read all oth ebook so we have to put our name down  on a list if we want to read the rest of the book. So everyday we get a new book and we don't know what it is until we find out, each day in a different way and creative activity.

On day one it was simple - the teachers pulled a name out of our stick box, The book was called The Honest Truth and it is about a boy who has cancer and runs away. We had to create a recount of what it would be like if we were Mark (mark is the one who has cancer). We also had to make a slide about routes and I found it quite easy because it was a simple task.

On day two (Tuesday) we played pass the parcel and on the first round it stopped where Gracie and I sat and Gracie opened it, and it went until the last layer (it went forever) and the book was called Space adventure and it is where you get to choose your outcomes and decisions, and it is really fun, we then had to create a persuasive piece of writing about which planet we thought that the person should live on. We also made a pick - a path about it.

On day three (Wednesday) we had to put together a digital puzzle to learn what the book was called and it was called 'The first hippo on the moon' and before we say the books pictures we got a piece of writing and buddy up with someone and create batik artwork, at the end of the day we got to see the real pictures in the book. We also had to do some optical Maths work where we try creating optical art where it is an illusion.

On day four (Thursday) We had a treasure hunt to find the book and it was wrapped. The person who found it got to open it and it was called ' A Fish In A Tree' it is about a girl who has trouble reading but won't admit to it. We had to read what it was like for someone with dyslexia and how hard it is to read. It is very hard to read and understand words. Here is a link to that. Did you find that Dyslexia sit hard to read? - I know I did.

Today (Friday) we had a vote what book it was but we didn't know which one won and then names got called out and we had choose what box (A, B or C) and we had to choose until it was the correct one. It was called 'The Person Controller' and I have already read this at home and it is fantastic. We haven't done activities on this one yet.

Overall book week has taught me a lot to do with genres and authors and other literacy and maths activities. Some activities were hard and some were slightly easier. But overall this week has been fun. sometimes you think a book won't be good and it ends up being great. This book week in our School has been amazing, you should try it.

Here are some photos:

Maths - Fractions of Amounts

LO: Learning Fractions of Amounts, how to solve the problems.

This week my maths group has been learning Fractions of amounts, this skill is still new to me so if I do something wrong, I am sorry. Today for maths we were told to create a DLO (digital learning object) about what we learnt. Now I am going to be showing you how to work a problem.

Here it is:

I hope that you enjoyed watching/reading what I was learning about. Please say if I did anything wrong or what I could change in the way that I present this.

Non - Chronological Reports

LO:  Learning about Non-Chronological reports. - Learning about how to write a Non-Chronological reports and how to write them well.
Over the past two weeks we have had 2 long write sessions where we have been writing Non - Chronological reports, and over the two weeks we have been editing different parts of our reports. The reports that we have made so far aren't real but they aren't 'narratives'.
I learnt that Non-Chronological reports need to be in the present tense and you need to write in 3rd person.
I found it difficult to write an ending without making it an advert or something that you would use if you were writing in 1st person.
I have improved by writing in some more formal language especially when I edited the conclusion of this story.                                    Here is My Non-Chronological Report:

The Turbo Blaster

The Turbo Blaster is a new type of shoe that can hover up to a metre off the ground and makes
you move around Faster. The Turbo Blaster was Designed in 2018’s March
and made in New Zealand by the Famous Designer: Grace Baker, she also asked for a trial run
before she released the shoe. 35 students from Yaldhurst Model School who are over 8 years
of age got asked to trial this shoe for one month because the shoe was mainly designed for
ages 8 and up.

Style

The shoe from up close and from a distance looks like a basketball shoe except for the fact
that it has lights that turn on and off in the shape of arrows, these lights can be any colour.
The colour of the shoe can also be custom made but it is mainly preferred in black.
Another special feature is that the shoe can hover because it has a special type of magnetism
in it called prancer and hover on command. It can also make you move very fast and zoom
all around the world because it has a very unique substance called turbo blast and so the shoe
was named after the substance. These Features are important because otherwise it would be a
plain old shoe. *On the bottom of the shoe in special writing is the designers name: Grace Baker.*

Materials

The outside of the shoes material is a plain leather that is real but there is a version that is fake
and which Grace Baker thinks will be preferred. The sole of the shoe is made out of a material that
is really fluffy and warm. The material on the bottom of the shoe is a hard rubber that doesn’t break
Price
The Price of Turbo Blaster will vary with popularity and how big the shoe is, for Children sizes the price will be $90 - 100 dollars and for adults the price will be $80 - 190 dollars.

Comparing the shoe to other brands this shoe is up there in the rankings, it has more stability and will last longer and that's why the price is so high. But most brands would say maybe $300 for this shoe.

The only difference between a child and an adult shoe is how much Turbo Blast and magnetism is in it. Adults shoe cost a lot more because of how much of Turbo Blast and Magnetism is in it.

Conclusion

The Statistics from the shoe trial demonstrates that 97.99 % of  the children liked the shoe because of it’s advanced technology, it floated on command, good stability and zoomed around on command. The children also found these shoes more enjoyable because in the event of the shoe dropping into water, no technology would be harmed because it is waterproofing. Because of these properties of the shoe the children preferred this type of shoe over any others.
